She's the author of several bestselling, prizewinning works of history, including "These Truths" and "We the People." She's a historian first — and that scholarly instinct is both this book's foundation and, per this listening experience, its biggest obstacle. An eight-hour audiobook that argues machines are quietly taking over civic life shouldn't require this much endurance from the human on the other end of the headphones.
